The expense of a new roof is one reason many people try to put it off as long as possible. Usually, the first question people want to know is: How Much Is A New Roof Going To Cost me? In reality we just can't answer that without looking at your roof. There are many factors that lead us to an estimated price. Factors we use to determine the cost of a new roof:

|
"Field investigations concluded that damage was caused by inadequate workmanship, standards and design. Some shingles were not installed properly, according to the manufacturers recommendations. For example, often shingles were attached with too few and/or improperly positioned nails." |
And did you know that over 80% of a roofing system is installed where you can't see it? So, once the top layer of a roof goes on, how would you ever know what kind of work was done?
- Would you know if your roofer replaced rotted decking/sheathing when required?
- Would you know that he used the manufacturers required six inch nails instead of four?
- Would you know what type of underlayment was used?
Unfortunately, some Hampton Roads roofing companies, or so they call themselves, take advantage of this and cut corners where you can't see it, so they can pad their profits.
The Right Roofer Does it Right
So just how critical is it to have the right roofer?
If you don't choose the right roofer, your roof may fail prematurely, and that's never a good thing! Besides that your roof may not be protected by the manufacturer's warranty or your homeowners insurance.
Because your home and your roof are just too important, don't trust your roof to just anyone. Make sure your roof is done right, and that its done right the first time.
Our Trusted Products
GAF Architectural Shingles - We use architectural shingles manufactured by GAF. Why? Because they are simply the best products out there. Here are a few reasons we like them:
- Algae Resistance – If you live in a community with a homeowners association, you know that when you get algae starting to grow, you’ll likely be getting a letter from your HOA to get it taken care of. In some counties, these shingles are considered code now.
- Strength and Toughness – These shingles will hold up to not only the sun and it’s effects, but wind and storm effects also.
- Green – Even though these shingles may have a 30 year or 50 year lifetime, GAF has begun recycling old shingles to be used in roadways. This keeps them out of our landfills and gives them new life.
- GAF doesn’t just make shingles, but they manufacture every piece of the roof system, so that they work together to protect your home more efficiently.
- GAF has one of the best warranties in the industry.
- We use them on our own house!
Our New Roof Installation Process
The asphalt shingles are only one component of a GAF roof system. When you replace a roof, it’s about installing a complete roofing system (see the video) that will protect your home for years to come.
But before we install the roof components, we need to:
The first thing we adhere to the roof deck is a leak barrier, this is a waterproofing membrane that is installed around the edges of the roof, the valleys and the ridge as these are the most vulnerable areas for water damage.
Then we adhere roof deck protection. It covers the whole area of the roof. It protects the roof deck against driving rain that can blow under your shingles
We will then install what’s called a starter strip of shingles, we place this around the edges of your roof and this helps to prevent the shingles from blowing off in high winds.
Now we install the quality asphalt shingles and the ridge vent. The ridge vent works with the soffits to remove heat and moisture from your attic.
The last step is to install ridge cap shingles, they are installed on top of the ridge vent to protect against leaks and high winds.
Then we clean up every bit of our mess and make sure your home looks better than when we arrived, well with the new roof and all.
The whole process from the time you sign the contract to the time we pull out of the driveway can be 7-10 days assuming the weather cooperates. The actual time on the roof is usually one or two days.

- evaluate the roof deck (plywood) for damage
- make any repairs

5 Reasons Not to
Re-Roof Over Existing Shingles
From time to time, people ask us about reroofing over existing shingles. Our answer is always the same. Don't do it.
We highly discourage this practice because all you are really doing is saving the cost of tear-off, which is minimal anyway. Here are a few other reasons:
We highly discourage this practice because all you are really doing is saving the cost of tear-off, which is minimal anyway. Here are a few other reasons:
- You are trapping a layer of heat between shingles that cause deterioration.
- Any warranty is going to be diminished because of this
- There can be no inspection of the roof decking to make sure it is not damaged
- You want to have good adhesion between the new shingle and the roof deck, which can't happen with a layer between
- You're driving nails through another shingle and then into the roof deck
